Bodiam Most Picturesque Castle in East Sussex

Bodiam Most Picturesque Castle in East Sussex

Bodiam castle looks exactly like the popular image of a medieval castle. It is quadrangular in shape and has a tower on each end of the wall. Being surrounded by a moat. The moat thus served as an almost impregnable defence, and although the castle was never attacked, the moat would have negated the effectiveness of siege warfare. It was built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, a former knight of Edward III, with the permission of Richard II, ostensibly to defend the area against French invasion during the Hundred Years\’ War.

Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela

Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela

Share/Bookmark

This famous pilgrimage site in north-west Spain became a symbol in the Spanish Christians’ struggle against Islam. Destroyed by the Muslims at the end of the 10th century, it was completely rebuilt in the following century. Construction on the cathedral was begun in 1075 in the reign of Alfonso VI, and sponsored by Bishop Diego Peláez. The work took place under the direction of Master Esteban on the remains of old churches built in devotion to the saint. It was built with three naves and a floor plan in a Latin cross, and had an area of about 8300 m². Its countless extensions have added numerous architectural styles to the building (Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, Plateresque and neoclassical). The La Gloria portico is the main entrance, and was created by Master Mateo in 1188. It features 200 figures referring to the Apocalypse, and the figure of Saint James the apostle appearing to welcome the pilgrims, supported on a column rising from the mullion. The Obradoiro façade of the cathedral is the work of Fernando e Casas y Novoa, and is considered to be one of the supreme expressions of the Spanish Baroque. The main altar is also in the Baroque style, and the crypt of Saint James the apostle lies directly beneath.

Modern Museo Soumaya in Mexico City

Modern Museo Soumaya in Mexico City

The Museo Soumaya in Mexico City is a private museum owned by the Carlos Slim Foundation. It is best known for its modern, innovative architecture at the Plaza Carso location in Nuevo Polanco. The glimmering and modern building is already being hailed as a new landmark in Mexico’s capital, but it is also being criticized as the pet project of a man who knows more about business than art. The new anvil-shaped structure, designed by Fernando Romero, featured a facade covered in aluminum hexagons, and the interior offered 183,000 square feet.

Palmyra before Isis Captured the City

Palmyra before Isis Captured the City

Palmyra, a 2,000-year old city with Roman ruins in the middle of the Syrian desert, is in the hands of ISIS. The city was noted in the annals of the Assyrian kings, and may have been mentioned in the Hebrew Bible. Palmyra was incorporated by the Seleucid Empire and then the Roman Empire, which brought prosperity. The major attraction of the area is the stunning ruins – the most famous and well-preserved of which are the Temple of Bel, the Theatre, the colonnade, the funerary towers, the hypogeum of 3 brothers, and the Arab castle, all in this very particular desert context.

Mesa Verde, Spanish for green table, offers a spectacular look into the lives of the Ancestral Pueblo people who made it their home for over 700 years, from A.D. 600 to A.D. 1300. They chose Mesa Verde as their settlement 1,400 years ago, establishing small pithouses (large holes in the ground with a wooden roof overhead) on the mesa tops. Today, Mesa Verde National Park protects over 4,000 known archeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. Mesa Verde is UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the southwestern corner of the state of Colorado.

The university site covers over 270,000 square metres of land and the walls of the different buildings would make up a surface of 55,000 square metres. As well as being the largest building in Spain it also encloses the biggest elliptical church in the world. To top this off, the Laboral Clock Tower stands defiant at 130 metres tall, once again the tallest stone construction in the country. The design of the tower was inspired by Alexandria Lighthouse and Seville’s Torre del Oro.

Alcazar Royal Palace of Seville, Spain

Alcazar Royal Palace of Seville, Spain

Share/Bookmark

The Alcázar of Seville is one of the most representative monumental compounds in the city. It is the Royal Palace of Seville, a magnificent complex of patios and halls in different architectural styles, from Mudéjar to Gothic. The heart of the complex is the Palace of King Pedro I, who constructed his royal residence in 1364 at the site of a Moorish palace. Nowadays, the Alcazar is a part-time residence for the present Spanish royal family, including King Juan Carlos. Even though only a few rooms are reserved for their usage, unfortunately, when they’re in, the complex becomes closed to tourists. It was granted World Heritage Site status in 1988.
