Los Nevados National Natural Park is a national park located in the Cordillera Central of the Colombian Andes. The area is made up of three large (2 of them active) volcanoes. In fact, Nevado del Ruiz erupted as recently 1985, causing devastation to the surrounding area. The other volcanoes are called Nevado de Santa Isabel and Nevado del Tolima. All three have hiking routes to suit various levels of ability and are well worth visiting. The 5,300-metre-high (17,400 ft) volcano Nevado del Ruiz dominates Los Nevados. The area is home to 1250 species of vascular plants, 200 bryophytes, 300 lichens and 180 macroscopic fungi. On the lower slopes and in the valleys the Andean wax palms are dominant. The upper Andean forest has trees reaching up to 30 m (98 ft) in height. The black and white Andean condor, vultur gryphus, with its wingspan of up to three meters (10 feet), can sometimes be spotted gliding along the high cliffs in the park.
