Saint Lucia – Caribbean Paradise with Golden Sands

Saint Lucia is a sovereign island country in the West Indies in the eastern Caribbean Sea on the boundary with the Atlantic Ocean. Part of the Lesser Antilles, it is located north/northeast of the island of Saint Vincent, northwest of Barbados and south of Martinique. It covers a land area of 617 km2 reported a population about 165,595. St. Lucia was known as the Island of the Iguanas by the Amerindian Arawak and Carib people who are known to have been among the earliest settlers here. The control of St Lucia switched from the French to English many times in the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1814, Britain took control of the island. The British set up a legal system based on the one used in England. St Lucia became an independent state on 22nd February 1979. This day is a public holiday in St Lucia. Despite the island’s volcanic origins, the sand on its beaches is golden. Anse Piton is a contender for the best in the entire Caribbean – never mind that they’ve cheated somewhat by importing fine white grains from Guyana. It is also, like all St Lucia’s beaches, open to the public. St. Lucia is home to one of the most remarkable distilleries, Roseau Valley, which is famous for producing more than 21 types of rum to sample or purchase. Located on Rodney Bay, it has stood in this location for decades. Sulphur Springs Park that is over thousands of years old and is a very historical site to behold, guarantees visions of an active volcano vent that spews mountains of mud.
