Mont Saint Michel is a small rocky island about 1 km from the north coast of France at the mouth of the Couesnon River in Normandy, connected by a causeway with the mainland. Mont-St-Michel is home to an abbey that dates back to the 11th century. The island, with its fast and fickle tides, was a notorious prison during the French Revolution of 1789. The isle has several good restaurants and a nightclub for visitors.
