The Niterói Contemporary Art Museum is a museum located in the city of Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro. Designed by the architect Oscar Niemeyer, the MAC has become one of the landmark of the city. The four-storey-structure with 16 meters high and 50 feet in diameter rises from the floor in a single cylindrical base and is inscribed in a square of 2,500 m². An 817-square metre reflecting pool that surrounds the cylindrical base gives lightness to the building. The Museum of Contemporary Art was completed in 1996. The permanent collection are in the museum on a renewable loan from Joao Sattamini, a Brazilian private collector who has amassed one of the biggest private collections of contemporary art in the world.

The Carnival attracts over a million visitors to Rio every year. Rio Carnival 2013 begins 40 days before the religious holiday of Easter. The competition between 12 elite samba groups dazzles more than a billion spectators. Almost all of the music played during Rio Carnival is samba. The main attractions are the Samba queens who are chosen in a contest. They need to be beautiful, confident and infused with a carnival spirit. The first attempt to celebrate the Carnival in Rio occurred in 1641.
